A Guide To Global Poverty

made by : ANGEL and CALISTA

WHAT IS

poverty is a global issue that's described as a state or condition in which a person or community lacks the financial resources and essentials for a minimum standard of living. Poverty-stricken people and families might go without proper housing, clean water, healthy food, and medical attention due to the low income level. (chen, 2019)

around 9.2% people of the world live in poverty. The oecd says that as of 2021, the country with the highest poverty rate is south africa with 26.6% followed by Costa Rica (20.9%) and Israel (17.9%) (peer, 2018)

poverty affects everyone especially kids. growing up in poverty isn't easy and may cause them to Have a poor physical health, Experience mental health problems, Have a low sense of well-being, Experience social deprivation, and Feel unsafe.

why should we

Although poverty is a general issue, not much people want to talk about it and why is that? Some might see it as a sensitive topic, but it is an important matter. Since most people living in poverty aren't able to speak out for themselves, us priviledged people should be able to shed light for them. Most people won't talk about poverty because it seemed like a very mainstream issue for them. Yes, poverty does occur everywhere around the world but, is it solved yet? NO. Which is a reason why we should continue to search for more solutions and spreading more awareness to people.

Another reason as to why people are hesitant to speak about this is because of trauma. Some people get out of their comfort zones to be who they are now. Many named celebrities and entrepreneurs were not from a very lucky family. Sometimes, talking about poverty just makes them feel uncomfortable. However, they should be proud of where they are now.

With all that being said, don't stop talking about poverty. Don't stop until people will actually go out of their way to contribute to the people in need.

In order to end poverty, we need to start from the core. Effective solutions are supposed to be long-term and not just temporary short-term resources as they won’t stop people from living in poverty. Several examples of such solutions are the following:

Better Wages

So many workers, especially from poorer countries, are paid an inhumane wage that can barely suffice. For example, some workers in Indonesia are paid around twenty thousand rupiahs a day. How can they provide for themselves with this amount of wage? Between expensive rent, human necessities (such as food, sanitary products, and more), etc, it becomes very difficult for them to do so. This is so normalized when it really shouldn't be. Workers/laborers should be paid at least a decent amount.

education

Providing education for kids in poverty is also extremely important. These kids were never even given a chance to become educated so how are they going to get proper paid jobs in the future when such jobs require good education and skills? With this, it becomes nearly impossible for them to have an improved life as the cycle of poverty continues.

Government or schools should definitely invest more in this, especially in remote places where access to education is even harder. Additionally, economists said "for every dollar we invest here, we're saving about seven dollars in future public spending."

equality

Oftentimes, women or people of a certain race are not treated or paid equally. This is definitely a problem. They need to be treated equally and be given equal wage so that they won't have to go through even more hardships to make ends meet.

"According to the UN’s High-Level Panel for Women’s Economic Empowerment, women’s unpaid labor adds up to $10 trillion per year — 13% of the global GDP. Likewise, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization, women own less than 20% of agricultural land, yet make up 60% of the agricultural workforce in parts of Africa and Asia." (Concern USA, 2020)

"The uncontrolled pay gap is driven by many forces. In our analysis on employee referrals, we found that a third of workers received some type of employee referral for their current job, yet men of color are 26 percent less likely than white men to receive them." (Payscale, 2020)

Although the solutions stated above are long-term, they might be hard for us to carry out. So here are some ways in which everyone can help :

Spread Awareness

It's very important to spread awareness on how serious poverty really is, especially to those who are unaware or ignorant of it. People should be aware of their privilege and use it to help those who aren't as lucky. Post and/or share links, websites (We recommend ours :)), pictures, videos, instagram posts, tweets, etc on your social medias, groupchats and such.

donations

Donations truly can help and make a change. You can donate to fund for poor children's education, for example. As stated above, education for these kids are one of the long-term solutions to end poverty. Thus, such a donation could really make a difference. Short-term resources, though won't stop the poor from being poor, are also still extremely helpful for their moment being. So please donate money, food, and other essentials to those who are in need of them.

main causes of

━━━━━━━༻❁༺━━━━━━━

The first cause is hunger. What this essentially means is that most people are actually struggling to get out of extreme poverty because of little to no access to nutritional food or clean water. Statistics show that more than 800 million people suffer from hunger, while over 2 billion people are not able to receive clean water at their home, and therefore, they need to walk miles for 200 million hours, only for one purpose: to search and bring back the clean water for their family. (Myers, 2018)

The next cause is little or no access to livelihood or jobs. This is pretty self explanatory. In order to make money, people need to work or do labour. Without job opportunities, people would not be able to make money and in turn they became less capable to provide for their family, which in turn leads to poverty. The same thing applies with inconsistent and low paying jobs. When a family is unable to work, this means that they need assistance in order to fulfill their necessities, and if they are not able to find jobs or assistance, another door opens to poverty. (Myers, 2018)

Some other causes of poverty are inequalities and lack of education. There are different types of inequalities, from social to economic inequalities. An example of these inequalities are inequalities based on gender, caste systems, or tribal affiliations. With unequal or in worst cases, no resources to provide the needs of a family, poverty appears once again. (Concern Worldwide US, 2020)

Lack of education is also really common, especially with people who are experiencing poverty. Although not everyone who lacks education lives in poverty, most extremely poor people have little to no education. Education is important because it is the foundation of the road which leads to success. Basically, higher educated students are most likely to get accepted when they apply for a job. Because they are able to work in those jobs that give high salaries, they are able to minimize the chance of having less or insufficient amounts of money to provide their basic necessities, which in turn, also leads to the prevention of poverty. (Relief Web, 2020)

POVERTY IN

We did a survey to a total of 30 students and asked about their opinions towards poverty in Indonesia. Here are the results.

We also asked about what people think is the main cause of poverty and their solutions. Most people answered that poverty is ecause of the lack of resources and education. For the solutions, most answered to increase doing charity works.

In the past two decades, the gap between the richest and the rest in Indonesia has grown faster than in any other country in South-East Asia. It is now the sixth country of greatest wealth inequality in the world. Today, the four richest men in Indonesia have more wealth than the combined total of the poorest 100 million people. (JAKARTA GLOBE, 2019)

Indonesia's poverty rate was down to 9.22 percent according to the latest survey in September 2019, the government announced on Wednesday. The government sets the poverty line at Rp 440,538 ($32.2) per capita per month based on living costs for basic foodstuffs at Rp 324,911 (73.75 percent) and Rp 115,627 for non-food needs.
